In 2008, Prime Tanning, Berwick's largest employer, closed after 70 years and left 11 acres of tired industrial buildings abandoned in the center of town; the land beneath was filled with hazardous wastes. Town officials and a group of volunteers, Envision Berwick, worked to get the site cleaned up and to find a way to revitalize the property.
